Dena Leo
Dena Leo Bunga Bunga Milbirrigun
Dena Leo is a Girraway woman of the Cardwell area of Northern Queensland. Her traditional name is Bunga Bunga Milbirrigun. Inspired by her late Nan, Bessie Jerry, Dena’s paintings communicate the passing down of traditional dreaming stories from generation to generation.
In Dena Leo Bunga Bunga Milbirrigun, her first touring exhibition with Queensland Arts Council's Ontour onexhibition program, Dena provides contemporary interpretations of Girramay stories that form part of the little known Aboriginal Rainforest culture of the Cardwell region.
Ms Leo has participated in a Cassowary Region Arts Council group exhibition and has held a solo show at Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, Cardwell. She has also given many cultural talks to students, visitors and locals and is a gifted story teller.
Dena’s work is held by a number of private collectors and her work has appeared as cover images for the Australian Journal of Physiotherapy.
